International Day of Light

Every year on May 16th, the anniversary of the first successful operation of the laser in 1960 by physicist and engineer Theodore Maiman, the entire world celebrates the part light plays in science, culture, art, education, sustainable development, medicine, communications and energy.

The Institut Photonique organises for this occasion activities open to the public, especially on Friday the 16th of May, 2025. The programme includes demonstrations, conferences exhibitions and laboratories visits in the Grand Est region to introduce the public to photonic technological advances.

Monday, May 12th
  • 9:00 am – 11:30 am: visits open to high school students
    ICube laboratory – Instrumentation and Photonic Processes (IPP) team (IPB site – Hôpital Civil)
Tuesday, May 13th
  • 9:00 am — 11:30 am: visits open to high school students
    ICube laboratory – Instrumentation and Photonic Processes (IPP) team (Cronenbourg site)
Wednesday, May 14th
  • 9:00 am – 11:30 am: visit from high school students
    ICube laboratory – Instrumentation and Photonic Processes (IPP) team (IPB site – Civil Hospital)
  • 1:00 pm – 5:00 pm: activities open to students and the public
    Group activity 1: Discover the science of light
    Group activity 2: Laser cutting
    Centre socio-culturel de Neuhof – Strasbourg, in partnership with the Jardin des sciences of the University of Strasbourg
Thursday, May 15th
  • 9:00 am – 11:30 am / 2:00 pm – 4:30 pm: visits open to high school students
    ICube laboratory – Instrumentation and Photonic Processes (IPP) team (Illkrich site)
  • 3:00 am to 4:00 am: visit of the company V-Optics
  • Presentations of NANOPHOT by doctoral students and interns
Friday, May 16th
  • 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm: conference on photonics and experiments
  • 9:00 am – 11:30 am / 2:00 pm – 4:30 pm: visits open to high school students
    ICube laboratory – Instrumentation and Photonic Processes (IPP) team (Illkrich site)
  • 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm: presentation of Théo MINCHELLA (doctoral student at the UTT) as part of a “Café de la recherche” special event. Theme: optical trapping.
